Detecting signs of illness in reptiles can be difficult. Many reptiles that are obviously ill may have been sick for quite some time before showing signs of illness.

  • Severe lethargy, pet minimally responsive to stimulation

  • Fractures with an open wound or bone protruding from the injury site

  • Anorexia or significantly deceased appetite for more than one week (less in a

    very young animal)

  • Paralysis

  • Severe trauma

  • Prolapse of tissue from the vent

  • Bite wound from predators such as dogs and cats

If you are uncertain as to whether or not your pet requires immediate attention, please contact the clinic to reach the doctor on call.

Emergency First Aid while waiting for help:

  • Pet cold to touch: increase temperature to 85-90 degrees with a heat lamp, space heater or heating pad set on low. Monitor temperature near the pet with a thermometer

  • Weak, anorexic pet: Due to stress, it’s best not to try to hand feed a sick reptile.

  • Prolapse: Keep tissue moist with contact lens solution and sterile lubricant.

  • Paralysis: Absolutely minimize handling, confine to a small enclosure.
