A raccoon in our squeeze cage

If you are considering purchasing an unusual exotic pet, please schedule a no charge virtual pre-purchase consultation with one of our veterinary team members.

Most exotic animals do not require a permit for ownership, but it is up to the owner to determine this prior to ownership.  Many wild animals native to Indiana (for example raccoons, opossums and foxes) require permits from the Department of Natural Resources.

Permits, or permit applications must be presented at the time the appointment is scheduled. For clients coming from out of state, your pet must be legally licensed in your state of residence.

All exotic pets, regardless of age and species, must be transported in a secure locked enclosure, and then transferred to one of our  squeeze cages in a specific safe examination room in our clinic.  After the transfer, the veterinary team will administer a light sedative to allow reduced-stress handling, and ensure the safety of both the animal and the veterinary team.  Exceptions for transfer to the squeeze cage and sedation are very young animals, or very sick pets where sedation is not necessary.  This determination will be at the veterinarian’s discretion without exceptions.
